Bonfire

A Time for Wisdom

The representatives of our three faith-communities have gathered around the ‘bonfire’ for some deep thinking about how the future is creating our present. That future is calling us to be wise. I truly appreciate how hard wisdom can be to find. It’s not just about accepting truths about ourselves or about looking for trends that portend success. Wisdom is more than reciting the past or shouting louder about the present. Wisdom is about listening to the future; about choosing to hope amid discouraging evidence. Wisdom means we make choices for ourselves that children yet unborn will enjoy in our places.

We are being called to wisdom. Even now, in the conversations between church leaders about how to handle common staffing needs, ministry gaps, and financial problems, we are listening to the future and allowing it a voice at the bonfire. It’s asking all of us to wisdom.

In the coming weeks it will be my prayer for those of us around this bonfire that we gaze into that blazing Pentecostal fire and see a future that is born from our pasts, but is more than our pasts. The fire of Pentecost burns for us, and calls us from our protected present out into the streets of our common future. I invite you to pray for wisdom. Pray for the wisdom to invite a wonderful future into this place.
