Mubi, Nigeria

Neils Joel Shelleng, Secretary of the Church Council, received an e-mail from our brothers and sisters from our partner church in Mubi and missionaries.

They write: “We greet all in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The greetings come from Mubi and all mission fields; Danzang, Hurenge, Mbiduwa and Torzazzam.”

The e-mail included a detailed account of trips made to the mission fields by the national Womens Fellowship of the LCCN and two visits by the Lutheran Youth Fellowship (LYF) of LCCN#1 Mubi and the Shall Holma Diocese: Several additional preaching points have been established, including Fihel village, where many people have received Christ; a church has been built and roofed in that community by LCCN #1 Mubi; one of the community members, Mr. Ayuba Dogo, has been sent to LCCN Bible School in Dumne to receive Bible training; during the visits by the women’s group and the youth group, many house-to-house visits were made; during one of the services, 79 persons were baptized, 34 adults and 41 infants.

The outreach mission churches are served by evangelists. First Lutheran, through the Global Missions Task Force, has been sending a quarterly contribution since 2001 to help support the evangelists.

Thank you for supporting this mission work!

Please pray for Pastor Agabus Malanchan, a former pastor at the Mubi church, who recently lost his wife and mother of his five children; the youngest is an infant. He is now a pastor in Jos, Nigeria. First Lutheran has sent our sympathy to Pastor Agabus and his family.

A travel group from the Minneapolis Area Synod left for Nigeria in mid-October. The group included six women from St. Paul Reformation Lutheran Church who went to help with a pilot program with the Women’s Fellowship of their partner church in Pella to increase the use of bed nets for malaria prevention in their community.

Fire Destroys Nigerian Church in Jos
We have recently learned that as a part of the violence, the LCCN Dogon Karfe Church, partner of St. John Lutheran Church, Zimmerman, was burned to the ground along with the home of its pastor. Two of the congregation’s young people were injured in the riots and another is missing.

We have been including Mary Beth and Bayo Oyebade and the people of Jos, Nigeria in our ‘Prayer and Care List’ since the violence erupted there in November 2008.
